Meredith Morton (Sarah Jessica Parker), een nerveuze en overgeorganiseerde zakenvrouw uit Manhattan, gaat voor het eerst de familie van haar vriend Everett Stone (Dermot Mulroney) ontmoeten. De twee zijn uitgenodigd voor het kerstdiner, en Meredith ziet enorm tegen de ontmoeting op. Terecht, zal blijken, want Meredith valt door haar tegenstrijdige karakter volledig uit de toon en totaal niet in de smaak bij de uitbundige Stones. Moeder Stone (Diane Keaton) en hun kinderen Amy (Rachel McAdams), en Thad (Tyrone Giordano) doen er alles aan om te voorkomen dat Everett de fout van zijn leven maakt door met Meredith te trouwen.
