Het Victoriaanse Engeland, eind negentiende eeuw. De jonge dokter Mortimer krijgt, na diverse keren ontslagen te zijn wegens een te moderne aanpak, een baan als assistent van dokter Dalrymple, die vrouwen behandelt voor 'hysterie'. Deze aandoening werd destijds toegeschreven aan vrouwen met prikkelbaarheid, woedeaanvallen of onverklaarbare huilbuien. Onze dokters kunnen deze tijdelijk verlichten door een zogenaamde bekkenmassage. In hun zoektocht naar een goede behandeling krijgen ze hulp van de uitvinder Edmund en besluiten ze te experimenteren met een nieuw elektrisch apparaat. Hun ontwikkelingen worden met een sceptische blik gadegeslagen door Charlotte, de geëmancipeerde en eigenzinnige dochter van Dalrymple.
